「黃大仙有求必應」是香港人的順口語，而句子黃大仙就是本廟的主角，原名黃初平，浙江人，生於公元328年，由於家貧故8歲便於浙江金華的赤松山放羊，後遇仙翁教其醫術，他亦潛心於山洞中修練5000日，終得成正果，得道成仙。

由於他曾遊歷四方，贈醫施藥導人向善，受惠者不計其數，故民眾爭相走告並修祠參拜。而於參時有所祈求者多能得償所願，故香火不絕，捐款亦源源而來，除部份作慈善用途外，有餘用作擴建廟宇，故成中國江南最大道觀之一，傳至香港後更是善信無數，是香港眾廟宇中香火最鼎盛的一間。

整座祠仿北京故宮建築群而造庭台樓閣，紅牆綠瓦，古氣盎然，氣派非凡，除供奉大仙外更供奉觀音，關帝及中國聖人孔子等，集中國三大教派佛、道、儒於一身。 此廟是外地遊客到港必訪之地，可觀性甚高。
