All Marie Levy Erlig wants is to . . . finally . . . have a nice normal baby. She’d miscarried during her first marriage. But she wants a child for a lot of reasons, not the least of them the fact that a child would finally be one thing she’d have that her sister wants but doesn’t have.

All Adam Josephson wants is for his church, the Life Force Spiritual Path, to grow and to be accepted. Reverend Argyle, with a mainstream church, has similar goals.

Van Jordan, Channel 11 newsman with network aspirations, wants a Big Story.

When two kids see an apparition they believe is the Virgin Mary, and shortly after that the (finally pregnant!) Marie delivers a bag of veggies to Share the Harvest, one of which seems to bear the likeness of Mary on it, her small town gets into a huge uproar. Adam, Reverend Argyle, Van, and others see in her a way to pursue their own agendas. In their quest for their goals, they are joined by many who truly believe—but none of these people takes into account what Marie wants . . . which is to be left alone to have a normal pregnancy and to give birth to what she keeps telling them is just a normal baby.

Even Marie’s husband, Cole, who at first was opposed to having a child, sees advantages for himself in her supposedly miraculous pregnancy . . . and in the process, drives a wedge between himself and Marie.

Only Pastor Hemmings has no selfish agenda. With the aid of a friend, he helps Marie. But can she really escape the public eye permanently?
