See Who’s at Your Door with SkyBell for iPhone

by Marianne Schultz

skybell-iconI’m intrigued by devices that you let you accomplish tasks that normally require your presence through a smartphone from anywhere in the world. Like the Nest thermostat that lets you adjust the temperature in your home or the Scanomat TopBrewer coffee maker that can make a latte for you, all through your iPhone. So Skybell, a doorbell with a built-in camera that will let you see and speak to whomever is at your front door, caught my eye and its companion iPhone app is now available in the App Store.

The SkyBell Doorbell app can automatically notify you when the SkyBell doorbell device senses motion at your front door or if someone rings the doorbell. Through the app, you can hear or speak to anyone there or simply pull up the live video feed if you just want to see what’s going on. Here’s the promo video showing SkyBell in action:

Skybell was first publicized through Indiegogo last fall where its creators started a campaign to raise funds to manufacture it. The project easily surpassed its funding goal though it seems to be experiencing the manufacturing and delivery delays common to new products with crowd-sourced funding. However, the appearance of the SkyBell Doorbell companion app in Apple’s App Store is surely a welcome sign for those who have ordered the product.

The SkyBell Doorbell app is free and works only with the SkyBell smart doorbell, which will set you back $199 unless you managed to order a discounted one through the Indiegogo campaign last year. You can order a SkyBell doorbell directly from the SkyBell site or through Amazon. If you get one, let us know how it works!

    $199? Awesome idea but that’s a lot of $$$

Love it, exactly what I need and want. Have ordered 3 pcs. I am not a big fan of Paypal, would be nice if they had the possibility to pay with credit card without paypal involved. And when will they be delivered. The app is released now and their website doenst seem updated. Hope this is not a scam that will cost me 597 dollars.

Gonna get ripped off my front door in Brazil…

$199 and easily thwarted by the person standing there? No thanks. 1/3 price web cam out of arms reach, stealth, does the job.

Hmm, I was thinking of a system I can build myself. It requires heavy installation though but it allows your door to call you through something like Skype. Any one intersted?

    Isn’t it expensive ??

There’s one called Doorbot i believe that will replace it for free if it gets stolen. all you have to do is file a police report.

Don’t waste your money. I ordered mine six months ago and still have not received it. Excuse after excuse and when they final started to ship – they shipped it to those who had just ordered on Amazon and screwed the early adopters.

Mine shipped today, from Amazon, for Wednesday delivery.

    Brian,
Please post back and give us a review.

Nice idea, but who would spend $200 on a doorbell? Think this is only going to sell to people who need to make a quick getaway if the police are at the door, or people who want to pretend they’re in a hacking den from “24″.

I think I’d rather take my old droid x2 or my old samsung galaxy and make it into a touch screen doorbell.. More tech.. less money.. more complicated.. need to waterproof it..

I got one through the indiegogo campaign. It installed easily and synced right away with my wifi network, but there is a lag between the doorbell ring and when it registers on the phone. Not too long, but long enough to be uncomfortable. The video is also a bit laggy.
On demand video is not available, but apparently is coming soon in an update.

What? No social media links for liking or sharing this page by Twitter or on FaceBook? I feel like I just time warped back a couple years. Thanks for making it harder in the modern epoch to actually send others to read your page.. ;)

I would not recommend a Skybell. I have one the does not work, I have done everything they said to do. I have upgraded my Internet and purchased new routers just to rule out my equipment. Their customer support is by far the worst I have ever experienced.

I was emailing the support staff and they just discussed doing an exchange. I filled out the paperwork and supplied them with my credit card information. Now two weeks have passed and I have nothing. They ignore most of my emails. I have included my phone number and they have not tried to contact me any way other than email.

Very disappointed with my experience so far!!

I can see now that it better have some way of storing a pic or video of whoever triggers the sensor. Otherwise, customers are going to complain that it was stolen or vandalized and they have nothing to show to the police, and it will get stolen if word gets out that it does not record anything.

You can expect some lag In the video, as anyone who has a high quality security camera can attest to. My Logitech hidef system can have up to 5 seconds of lag by the time the Video shows up on my iPhone.
