Some Changes to AppShopper (Ratings, What’s New)
Regular users of the site may have noticed some changes to the site over the past day or so. Unfortunately, we’ve have to remove a couple of features from the site.
- App listings presently have no App Store “rating” associated with them.
- “What’s New” text is no longer available for updates.
The lack of the official App Store rating is due to our effort to stay in compliance with Apple’s policy on pulling data from the App Store. At their request, we will no longer be pulling the official App Store ratings for AppShopper. A side effect has been that we’ve also lost the “What’s New” data for now. That data, however, we still hope will return in the near future.
Readers should note that we do have plans to replace that rating data in useful and interesting ways. AppShopper users have long been able to rate owned apps under the MyApps tab. It’s a feature we’ve had for some time, but one we haven’t promoted. We will be making it easier for you to rate your own apps, and aggregating that data for everyone’s benefit.
As a first step to make that easier, here are links to importer tools that allow you to seed your MyApps list automatically from your home computer:
Download Links for AppShopper Importer
- AppShopper Importer 1.0.3 (Mac)
- AppShopper Importer 1.0.3 (Windows)
Finally, we are also working on integrating 3rd party review site ratings and review links into our listings to provide additional perspectives on Apps.
All in all, there’s a lot of work being done behind the scenes here at AppShopper, and over the next few weeks to months, there should be some nice improvements seen.

how about a friendlist so we can share My Apps, Wish list or some recommendation with them?

Thanks for all that work you are doing. I’m starting to be addicted to your service – the day is bad if I don’t start it with AppShopper

I understand Apple is a business and you have to comply with them, but that’s really lame how they “crybaby’d” over you needing to remove the App Store’s official ratings. I mean, c’mon: they’re ratings — it’s not like AppShopper’s using secret code or something. I don’t hate Apple nor am I a fanatic but they sure have been crybabies lately about really lame things. ::rant over:: Anyway, thank you AppShopper for your hard work and all you continue to do! Hopefully Apple will just let you be before the next update.

Losing the “What’s New” text for updates is by far the biggest loss. Having all new information available at a glance along with the app’s descriptions was such a nifty feature of Appshopper. Hopefully it comes back soon. Great job on such an awesome site/service nevertheless!

Those two restrictions are just silly. What’s the point?

My idea I had for Appshopper to display ratings in a totally new way will never come to fruition now…

I second user’s comments (http://appshopper.com/blog/2010/11/30/some-changes-to-appshopper-ratings-whats-new/#comment-4503) — the “What’s New” data will be sorely missed.

I am so sad about losing the “what’s new” text. I already learned years ago that the apple user ratings we banned from apps like these, but wth with the “what’s new” !?!?!

When running the Appshopper Importer for Windows, I repeatedly got errors that the URL was too long. I think you need to check the URL that your application generates then split it into multiple requests if it’s too long. You’ll also want check for this issue in the Macintosh version.
Cheers!

Without the ‘What’s New’ the use of your site becomes worthless email spam: the update emails have no information that is useful. Fix hit without Apple’s blessing or become history with their blessing.

Importer cannot find the location of iTunes application. I was unable to locate the folder with applications manually. Can you help?
