SlingPlayer for iPad Released

by Marianne Schultz

As promised earlier this month, Sling Media has released its SlingPlayer Mobile app for the iPad. The app just hit the App Store a few moments ago and is priced at $29.99. The app allows owners of a compatible Slingbox device to watch and control TV content at home on an iPad anywhere.

When connected over 3G or Wi-Fi to a Slingbox SOLO or PRO-HD (Slingboxes* sold separately), you can play anything you can see on your home TV on your iPad. View and control video sources such as:

  • Cable set-top box and DVR
  • Satellite set-top box and DVR
  • Telco / IPTV set-top box and DVR
  • Basic Cable
  • Digital Over-the-Air broadcasts (Slingbox Pro-HD only)
  • Tivo
  • Apple TV
  • Home security cameras

The app’s description specifies that this app will only work with the Slingbox SOLO and Slingbox PRO-HD devices.

As we expected, Sling Media created a separate app for the iPad instead of converting the existing SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone app into a universal one. If you have both an iPad and iPhone and want to be able to make use of your Slingbox on both devices, you’ll need to pony up $29.99 for each version.

As usual greedy greedy sling media screws their customers yet again. I for one will not be buying this, I will just use my iphone program, or get a hacked version at some point.
