Hindu Baby Names

Hindū is the Persian name for the Indus River, first encountered in the Old Persian word Hindu (həndu). The term “Hindu” was used for those who lived in the Indian subcontinent on or beyond the "Sindhu".

The term Hindu was introduced to the English. Hinduism is often stated to be the "oldest religious tradition" or "oldest living major tradition. Hinduism is the world's third largest religion after Christianity and Islam, with approximately a billion adherents, of whom about 905 million live in India.

The naming of a child is one of the most fundamental Hindu "samskars" or scripture based rites. The name is selected in such a way that its meaning can inspire the child to follow the path of righteousness. It is a most common practice among Hindus to name their children after the names of god-goddess, saints, places, ragas, leaders, deities, historical events, rivers, seasons etc. It is believed that by repeatedly calling such names one is reminded of the Lord.
