2009 Presidential Inauguration Guide

Thank you for using the Qorvis and Patton Boggs 2009 Inauguration App, mobilized by PointAbout, which has allowed tens of thousands of people to navigate Washington. Even after the Inauguration, you can continue to use this app to help you find your way around the nation’s capital.

Although the inauguration has passed, you will still find this application very useful for navigating around Washington, DC, including Metro schedules, Zagat restaurant reviews, nearest Starbucks, and real-time cameras to show you how busy various areas of DC are.

Why and how this app was developed:

Qorvis and Patton Boggs had a lot of clients and friends coming to Washington, DC for the Inauguration of President Barack Obama. Given the historic proportions of the event, we knew it would be important to help our guests navigate the city—something we help them do professionally anyhow (public affairs, issue advocacy, media relations, etc.). Instead of just giving everyone maps and restaurant recommendations, we felt it was most appropriate to create a mobile application, which would also serve to celebrate the nation’s first high-tech president.

As a fully-integrated communications firm, Qorvis designed the web application using its in-house capabilities, which we’ve done for numerous clients. Given the short timeframe, however, we decided to partner with our friends at PointAbout to “wrap” our web application with their thin-client springboard to mobilize the app on multiple mobile platforms as a hybrid web and native application—iPhone and BlackBerry.

We received the best of both worlds with this approach: the speed and flexibility of a web application, combined with the benefits of a native application, such as use of the camera, GPS, etc. We also partnered with FortiusOne to add a real-timepolling component to gauge real-time user sentiment about the Inauguration. FortiusOne analyzed and visualized the results through their GeoCommons platform. You can see the polling results on a nationwide map at www.NavigatingWashington.com

From concept to creation, our team—pulled together at a rapid pace—worked seamlessly to bring this idea to life. It was named The New York Times app of the week and the official Washington, DC government Inauguration website linked to it.

We’re proud to share it with everyone—so enjoy!
