EnglitinaXL - 48-Button English Concertina

EnglitinaXL is an authentic-sounding English Treble Concertina for the iPad.

The button layout is identical to a standard 48-button acoustic instrument.

EnglitinaXL is the perfect app for someone interested in the English Concertina to have an experience of playing the instrument and become familiar with the button layout without the expense of purchasing a real concertina.

For experienced players, it can serve as a practice aid when it might be impractical to play the real instrument.

If you currently play the English Concertina, you will quickly be playing tunes on the app.

If you want to learn to play the English Concertina, and don't yet have an acoustic instrument, the fingerings and skills you learn playing the app will transfer directly over to the real instrument. Click the links on the help screen to quickly find more information about playing the English Concertina including fingering charts, discussion forums, and online stores where you can purchase an acoustic instrument.

To get started, make sure that the orientation lock switch on your iPad (just above the volume controls on the side) is in the off position, then rotate the iPad to landscape orientation to play.

To play, place the iPad on your lap and press the buttons.

Scale patterns on an English Concertina alternate between buttons on the left and right sides.

Multiple buttons may be pressed at the same time to play chords.

The optional note guide (touch the '?' icon) shows the note names.

Touch the 'i' icon to show the volume slider. All settings are saved when the app exits.

Touch the area between the buttons for tremolo effects. The higher up in the area, the greater the effect.

Turn the iPad to portrait mode to display the instructions page with links to English Concertina related websites.

Play along with tunes in your iPad's music library by starting a track using the iPad's built-in iPod app, then launching EnglitinaXL. Adjust the volume by touching the 'i' icon, then use the on-screen volume control and iPad volume control buttons to set the balance between the music and the concertina sounds.

EnglitinaXL is built on the latest high performance audio engine used on several of my latest Tradlessons apps for very rapid response.

Uses extremely high-quality per-button audio samples recorded from my personal concertina collection.

Q: I have an iPad with iOS5 and the sound stops when I put four fingers on the screen.

A: Go into the iPad Settings app, and disable the "Multitasking Gestures" feature. This feature creates issues for all apps like mine that use more than 3 fingers on the screen at a time.

Q: I'm not hearing any sound, help!

A: Make sure that the mute switch on your device is turned off.

Q: I just updated my iPad to iOS 6.0.1 and I'm stuck at the help screen!
