The Secret Science Behind Miracles
by Max Freedom Long [1948]
Fire-walking, psychic powers, instant healing and other secrets of the Hawaiian Kahunas.
Description:
=========
Max Freedom Long was fascinated with the shamans of Hawaii, the Kahuna. While this is not, by far, an ethnographic account of Hawaiian healing, it is informed by anecdote and personal experience in the islands. Long spent many years in Hawaii, and besides several books on 'Huna' he also apparently wrote several mystery novels in that setting. This book, one of the first he wrote on the subject of Huna, is typical of the others, and if you like this, you'll probably like his other writings.
Huna is a Hawaiian word adopted by Max Freedom Long (1890-1971) in 1936 to describe his theory of metaphysics which he linked to ancient Hawaiian kahuna (experts).

About Author:
===========
Max Freedom Long (b. 1890 d. 1971) was an American teacher and philosopher.
Invention of Huna:
==============
Long decided to call his compilation of teachings Huna, a word he invented. Although Long researched and published articles on Fire-walking, he never firewalked himself. He founded an organization called the Huna Fellowship in 1945 and, starting in 1948, published a series of books on Huna that are still in print.
Origin of the name Huna:
====================
Long chose the word Huna for his system because he claimed it meant "the secret" or "hidden secret." He wrote that he derived it from the word kahuna, who were priests and master craftsmen who ranked near the top of the social scale.
According to the Pukui and Ebert Hawaiian Dictionary, Huna means "minute particle, grain, crumb, gram, speck, tiny bit, scrap, minutia; small, little, powdery." The second definition is "hidden secret."
There are no accepted Hawaiian sources - Malo, Kamakau, 'I'i, Kepelino - that refer to the word Huna as a tradition of esoteric learning. Many Native Hawaiians resent the representation of Huna as being Hawaiian and regard it as an invention with no Hawaiian basis.
