In Hindu tradition, universe is created, destroyed and recreated through a series of recurring time periods/era made of four yugs (age) - Satyug (golden age of truth), Tretayug (silver), Dwaparayug (bronze) and Kaliyug (iron). We are currently living in Kalyug which is plagued with disasters, poverty, terrorism diseases, war, despair, denial and hopelessness. World see these times whenever evil forces becomes more dominant than the divine forces. It is believed that performing Satyanarayan pooja protects you from all these evil forces.
Lord Vishnu is believed to be protector and sustainer of the universe and life. Satyanarayan Pooja is one of the best and easiest ways to seek blessings from God Vishnu, who is responsible for maintenance of this universe.Geeta and other holy books state that during the 'Kalyug,' the fruit that one gets by hearing the 'Satyanarayan Katha(story)' is enormous.
'Shri Satyanarayan Katha' is the most popular amongst all kathas in India. Shri Satyanarayana vrat (fasting) is the easiest and most inexpensive way of self-purification and self-surrender in the feet of almighty. Satyanarayan pooja is usually performed on any auspicious occasions or full moon nights. Hindus believe performing this puja helps them fulfil their desires, brings them prosperity, removes fear and free them from bondage and ego. They can take the path of truth and get rid of all evil forces in this kalyug.
The story is divided into five chapters. After every chapter one can ring bell and perform diya aarti around Satyanarayanaji’s picture, same as you can do in real life.
