Lightpaths

Lightpaths is a variant of the classic 70's game: Black Box. The goal of this game is to identify the location and orientation of mirrors in the cells of a square.

A cell may or may not contain a mirror. If it contains a mirror it is placed along one of its diagonals. The mirrors are double-sided -- has reflective surface on both sides.

Probes (light rays) are sent from the cells on the boundary. The rays: (1) pass through a cell if it does not have a mirror or (2) get reflected if a mirror is present. Two boundary cells that have the same number indicates that if a light ray is generated from one cell, it ends up at the other cell.

The objective of the game is to identify the location and orientation of the mirrors by observing the numbers on the boundary cells. You are required to find "any" arrangement with the exactly given number of mirrors that explains how boundary cells are paired. This game is quite challenging when you increase the number of mirrors.

This implementation features:
(1) 6x6 and 8x8 boards.
(2) 3 levels of difficulty: 2 - 6 mirrors; 7 - 12 mirrors; and 13 - 18 mirrors. In each level, the number of mirrors is chosen randomly.
(3) You can get hints on your current placement of mirrors by clicking the "Check" button. Correct locations (with orientation) are highlighted in green. This is simply a hint that you can fix those mirrors in those positions and still find a solution.
(4) When you check a solution, if a mirror is highlighted in green, it implies that you don't have to change that position to find a solution. If a mirror is not highlighted, it may need to be moved. This should be viewed as hints provided by the system.
(5) Three different game modes based on the constraint on the number of mirrors to be placed: (1) None - No constraints on the number of mirrors to be used. (2) MAX - A solution with a maximum of given number of mirrors is to be found; and (3) EXACT - A solution with exactly the given number of mirrors is to be found.
(6) A more challenging game play using "fixed cells" - cells whose status cannot be changed. The fixed cells appear gray in color.

This is a very simple, intuitive, and engaging game. Enjoy!

What's new

This version adds three different game modes based on the constraints on the number of mirrors to use in the solution. (1) None - No constraints on the number of mirrors to be used. (2) MAX - A solution with a maximum of given number of mirrors is to be found; and (3) EXACT - A solution with exactly the given number of mirrors is to be found.

As every software reviewer would like to say: Version 1.2 is what Version 1.0 should have been.
