The Adventures Of Doogie Stone

The medieval era war lord sends his youngest son and one of his best soldiers to visit four cities and collect the final signatures on a peace treaty and mutual defence agreement that the warlord has been negotiating for years. The son is to be accompanied by the eldest daughter of the war lord's most faithful ally and her hand maiden. He is also assisted by his sentient pet crow. An addition to collecting the required signatures, the two are given the additional task of finding spouses to bring home for their parents' approval.

Meeting treachery, deceit and open confrontation at several places along the route, the team travels through dangerous and hostile territory making friends and dispatching enemies to achieve their mission. No sooner than they have completed their mission they discover that they have to return home overland in the dead of winter to defend their own castles against invasion by an enemy with a powerful new weapon.

The story is the coming of age of a young man who learns that the search for love may not be as distant as it might seem and the search for honour sometimes ends at home.

About The Author:

Bob Cherny has been a fan of science and speculative fiction since he found it in the young people's section of the library. In grade school, he devoured works by Heinlein, Norton, Azimov, and Huxley among others. By the time he had finished high school, he had read every science fiction book in the town's library. 
College, and a disastrous Freshman year at Brandeis University, forced a reevaluation of reading materials. Switching majors to theater brought exposure to Shaw, Strindberg, Ibsen, Stoppard, Pinter, Shakespeare and a host of young would-be playwrights. As a technical theater major, Bob found that the quantity of material to which he was exposed often surpassed the quality. Too busy to do any writing of his own, Bob devoted his time to supporting the efforts of others.

The Vietnam War brought a tour of duty in South Carolina and the opportunity to begin graduate work at the University of South Carolina. The war ended and Bob completed his course work before migrating to Florida and the only job he could find at Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus World. Master's degrees in theater were not worth much in the aftermath of the Vietnam War.
