Prep Quiz is a valuable teaching tool for some of the words that early primary school children are first introduced to. Prep Quiz is a flash card game that is specifically designed to give parents a reading revision tool while they are away from home. Whether you’re on the bus, at the shops or out to dinner, those small periods of idle time can be filled with a quick review of the words that your child is expected to be reading at home.
With the supervision of a parent, the words that the child correctly identifies are given a higher star rating and are not presented to the child as frequently. Those words that the child is not yet familiar with are given a lower star rating and will be presented more frequently to give the child more experience with recognising them. If at any time the ratings that have been collected against the words no longer seem relevant to the child’s progress, they can be reset to give your child a fresh start.
The user interface clearly shows the word using the typeface widely used in Australian primary schools and sourced from the Victorian State Government’s Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. The buttons used for feedback are softly coloured red or green and feature a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” icon to indicate the outcome of the child’s guess as their supervisor enters their result.
The words used in this application have been taken from The Reading Teachers Book of Lists, Third Edition; by Edward Bernard Fry, Ph.D, Jacqueline E. Kress, Ed.D & Dona Lee Fountoukidis, Ed.D. The selection of words used in this application share 80% of the words used in the Magic Words (or M100 words) used in many Australian primary schools. They are grouped into ten groups of ten words. The groups are named after different animals, and the difficulty of the words gradually increases with the ferocity of the animals.
