Access thousands of free books -- from the classics of literature to the newest Creative Commons licensed SciFi. BookShelf downloads free books from FeedBooks.com right on your iPhone. Access your purchased WebScription.net books or choose from the Baen library of dozens of free SciFi titles. Load many types of files from your own computer over your WiFi network.

BookShelf supports ebooks in plain-text, HTML, Palm (see below), FB2, and several other formats (see the website for an up-to-date list). Using the included ShelfServer, e-books with pictures and clickable links are transferred from your Mac, Windows, or Linux computer over WiFi. Books are automatically compressed and optimized for best display on the iPhone's small screen. Even large, multi-megabyte e-text files open and display in seconds. Create named bookmarks to keep your place in any file type, and customize font and color themes for maximum comfort. Navigate through links in files and open website and email links in Safari or Mail.

Also available in the AppStore is an ad-free version of BookShelf with additional features including book cover art, ability to show full size images, downloading of books directly from the web without a server, and other enhancements.


Downloading e-book files:

A WiFi network is required to transfer books between your iPhone and your home computer. See www.iphonebookshelf.com to download the free ShelfServer application (Java 1.5 or newer required). Books may also be downloaded from online ShelfServers like the WebScription.net SciFi library or from FeedBooks.com directly on your iPhone over WiFi or cellular data connection.

Reading in Airplane Mode is no problem. No Internet connection is required once books are transferred.

PalmOS Format Support:

Supported Palm etext formats currently include Plucker, PalmDoc (Aportis), and many non-DRM (non-encrypted) Mobi files. Most purchased Mobi files including those from mobipocket.com or Kindle will NOT work. Anything which required a "PID" or "reader ID" at time of purchase will not work. Notably, purchased Mobi files from Webscription.net and the Baen Free Library DO work fine. Support for the newer "HuffDict" compression format in Mobi files is limited. Many HuffDict files work fine, but some display with visible HTML tags and other artifacts. Other PDB and PRC file types including iSilo and eReader are NOT supported at this time.

What's new

New Features:
* Support for ePub format books

* Search by title, author, or filename for books to download from FeedBooks or your own ShelfServer.
* Displays cover art for books if available (only in download screens for LT, everywhere in full version).
* New Details screen shows synopsis, full title & author, and other data about books where available.

Improvements - BookShelf:
* New Preferences screen with color/font preview and help for each option.
* Choice of tap scrolling regions -- top/bottom or left/right half of screen.
* New Preference to set text justification.
* Download screens support landscape view to better display long titles.
* Darker startup screen and removal of several bright "flashes" when opening books using dark background color schemes -- saves your night vision!
* Enlarged hit area for scroller in the navigation (jump) window -- easier for "fat fingers" (like mine!) to use.

Improvements - ShelfServer:
* Option to auto-split files into separate Plucker chapters based on HR or H[123456] HTML tags.
* ShelfServer includes a new log window to help diagnose any remaining conversion issues. Please copy/paste the log in any support emails about conversion/truncation problems.

Bug fixes - BookShelf:
* Fix sluggish scrolling of plain-text files in 2.2+ firmware.
* Fix hang when using auto-scroll in plain-text files (same bug as above).

Bug fixes - ShelfServer:
* Fixed truncation of books which had out-of-character-set special characters.
* Vastly better international character set support. Both UTF and ANSI character sets are properly handled by the server. PLEASE send any remaining unreadable non-Roman files to support!
* Removed extra spaces in HTML tags introduced by ShelfServer conversion.


IMPORTANT:

Please make sure you're using the latest version of the ShelfServer application. Some of the features (and many of the bug fixes) above may require you to re-download your books using the new server. If you're using the default Java WebStart option, it should update automatically. If you downloaded the ZIP or WAR version, please get the new version from the same URL as before.

Please Read The Fine Welcome document. The latest version should appear in your main file listing when you upgrade. It explains all the new features and has important details about some of the new features like cover art and direct URL downloads.
