Vingt Mille Lieux Sous les Mers (French)

This classic science fiction novel by Jules Verne was published in 1870. The title refers to the horizontal distance traveled under the sea and not depth, as one French league equals 3 miles or 5.5 km. A French marine biologist, Professor Pierre Aronnax, is the narrator of this story. The main character is the secretive Captain Nemo, who heads a submarine called Nautilus, which is free from any land based government.
