Poil de Carotte (French)

Poil de carotte or “red-haired” is a long piece of news or Jules Renard's autobiographical novel published in 1894, which tells the childhood and the setbacks of a badly liked red haired child. Red-haired is a very badly liked child, who, to fight against the daily humiliations and the maternal hatred, has only the guile, this weapon of the weak. Doubtless it is in this unfortunate childhood that it is necessary to look for the sources of the scepticism and the irony of Jules Renard ( 1864-1910 ), its art of the understatement, its dense and precise style, its cruelty of observation. The narrative could be considered as a continuation of short sketches forming chapters. François Lepic, nicknamed "Red-haired" because of his red hair, is shown as victim of the humiliations and the indifference of his parents, his brother Félix and his sister, Ernestine.
