Orlando Furioso is a romantic epic from the 1500s by Ludovico Ariosto (1474–1533). The poem, comprised of 46 cantos, is inspired by the Carolingian cycle and the Celtic legends of the history of Britain. Orlando Furioso tells the story of paladin Orlando during the the war between the Christian army of Charlemagne and the Saracens. Rather than faith and Christianity, however, the main themes revolve around love and herosim, as represented in the magical adventures of Orlando. The poem also presents the famous narrative technique of interlace, according to which episodes are interruppted at their climax to create narrative tension.
