O Navio Negreiro é um poema de Castro Alvez, declamado pela primeira vez em 7 de setembro de 1869, quando o poeta tinha apenas 22 anos. Uma obra-prima do movimento abolicionista que lutou contra a escravidão no Brasil do século XIX, esta obra, uma das mais importantes da Literatura Brasileira, descreve em detalhes assustadores os sofrimentos dos escravos africanos nos navios que os trouxeram ao Novo Mundo e a uma vida de miséria, longe de casa e da família. Usando diferentes métricas para passar diferentes emoções, as descrições de pesadelo dessa viagem infernal da África ao Brasil, uma à qual muitos não sobreviviam, é um triste retrato da crueldade humana.

O Navio Negreiro (Slaver Ship) is a poem by Brazilian author Castro Alvez, and it was first read on September 7 (Brazil’s Independence Day), 1869, when the poet was only 22. A masterpiece of the abolitionist movement that fought slavery in the 19th century, this poem, one of the most important in Brazilian Literature, describes in chilling detail the sufferings of the African slaves in the ships that brought them to the New World and to a life of misery, far away from home and family. Using different metrics to convey different emotions, the nightmarish descriptions of the hellish trip from Africa to Brazil, one many did not survive to see it through, is a saddening portrait of Humanity’s cruelty
