A fierce and concise critique to fame, ostentation, and phony intellectuality, this satirical short story by Brazilian author Lima Barreto was originally published in a newspaper in 1911. It is a confessional over a beer to a friend of a former grifter and con artist who has made his name and fortune based on the false allegation that he was fluent in the Javanese language, even though he only learned its alphabet and a few facts about Java’s literature and geography taken from encyclopedias, after he saw a newspaper ad for a Javanese teacher. Hired by a rich man who only wanted to read the stories from a book that was a family heirloom, he cheated and lied his way through life until achieving a highly praised position as a Consul , showing less and less signs of remorse or fear of being caught over the years.
