Esta obra de 1857 escrita por José de Alencar é um ótimo exemplo da literatura romântica ufanista do Brasil, tendo sido originalmente publicada na forma de folhetim. Inicialmente baseada na figura real do colonizador português do século XVII, D. Antônio de Mariz, um dos fundadores do Rio de Janeiro, o livro logo passa a descrever as aventuras fantásticas, quase de super-herói, de Perí, um índio guarani, que faz amizade com o pioneiro e se junta a ele para combaterem seus inimigos, assim como para proteger a bela e casta Cecília (ou Cecí, como o herói a chama), a filha de D. Antônio. O Guarani mostra como o autor acreditava que a enfraquecida sociedade portuguesa e as culturas nativas do Brasil deveriam se unir para formar um novo povo e uma nova civilização.

This 1857’s novel written by José de Alencar is a great example of Brazilian nationalistic romantic literature, and was first published as a serial in newspapers of the time. Initially based on the real-life Portuguese settler of the 1600s, D. Antônio de Mariz, one of the founders of Rio de Janeiro, the book proceeds to tell the fantastic, almost super-heroic, tales of Pery, a native Brazilian of the Gaurani people, who befriends the famous pioneer and joins forces with him to fight their enemies, as well as to protect the beautiful and chaste Cecilia (or Cecy, as the hero calls her), D. Antônio’s daughter. O Guarani shows how the author believed Portugal’s ailing society and the indigenous cultures of Brazil should merge to form a new people and a new civilization.
