O Crime do Padre Amaro is a novel written by Portuguese writer José Maria de Eça de Queiroz. The book denounces the corruption of Portuguese priests and the average attitude of the middle-class society. The novel also questions the celibacy of the priests.

The story of the novel is about a young priest Amaro, who reaches Leiria to serve as a diocesan administrator. Soon obsessed with lust, Amora gets involved with Amelia. The love affair ends in a tragedy when Amelia becomes pregnant and dies later. The Church tries to cover up the issue and even protects Amaro. The novel is considered as a powerful literary force that will reform the society. This is also the first realistic novel to be written in Portuguese language.
