Mastro Don Gesualdo (Italian)

Published in 1889, Mastro Don Gesualdo is one of the most important novels by Veristic writer Giovanni V***a (1840–1822). The story takes place in Sicily during the Italian unification and tells the story of Don Gesualdo, an ambitious stone-mason who becomes landowner and ascends to nobility by marrying a fallen aristocrat. Don Gesualdo’s success coincides with his downfall. Despised by the nobility as a nouveau riche and envied by the poor people in his hometown, Don Gesualdo ends up alone and isolated. Mastro Don Gesualdo belongs to the series of novels called ciclo dei vinti (the cycle of the defeated), through which V***a attempted to describe the constant human struggle with existence.
