Gustave Flaubert wrote this seminal work of Realism in 1856. Madame Bovary was first serialized in La Revue de Paris, which resulted in a trial for obscenity, thereafter achieving a notoriety which resulted in a bestseller book in 1857. The novel focuses on a doctor’s wife, Emma Bovary, and her adulterous affairs. The story is set in provincial northern France, near the town of Rouen in Normandy. Though it has a simple plot, this novel’s true art lies in its details and hidden patterns. The author Flaubert claimed to always be searching for “the right word”, and was considered a perfectionist. Flaubert’s prosecution was because of "insult to public and religious decency and to good morality".
