The story recounts Phileas Fogg’s attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days, with his personal valet Passepartout, based on a wager. Fogg’s character is a wealthy, unmarried Englishman who lives modestly but with mathematical precision. This book was written during a difficult period in Verne’s life. The technological innovations in travel of the 19th century inspired Verne to dream up the plot for the book one afternoon in a Paris café.
