Author Henri Beyle Stendhal’s 1830 psychological novel is often considered the first realist novel. Composed in two volumes, this story is about Julien Sorel, the ambitious son of a carpenter in a French village. This flawed hero uses his drive, intelligence, talent, hard work, deception, and hypocrisy to rise above his modest station in life. Stendhal refers to his Beylisme ideal, in which the goal of existence is to attain personal happiness by any means. He also satirizes the hypocrisy of French society and religion in that period.
