Le Père Goriot (French)

Novelist and playwright Honore de Balzac wrote this realist novel in 1835. Le Pere Goriot is considered Balzac’s most important work. Based in Paris during the Bourbon Restoration, it follows the lives of three characters, an elderly man, a mysterious criminal, and a naïve law student. Widely popular, this book gave rise to the French term “Rastignac”, a social climber willing to use any means to improve his position.
