Le Cid (Spain)

Le Cid is the most famous theater play of Pierre Corneille (1606-1684), the greatest tragedian of the 17th century (the century of Louis XIV, the Sun King) with Jean Racine, This tragedy, the title of which comes from the name of an actual Spanish hero, the Cid Campeador, was played at the Chateau of Versailles in December 1636 or January 1637. It has immediately met with an immense success, which never faded, making it one of the most famous masterpieces of French Literature. The subject of the play is the threatened love between Rodrigue –le Cid- son of the Spanish Heir’s preceptor, and Chimène, daughter of a Court Baron. An accute quarrel between the two fathers ends with Rodrigue killing Chimène’s father in a duel. In spite of her love, Chimène asks the King to order the execution of Rodrigue, but he becomes the hero of the struggle against the Spanish Moors, and the King cannot satisfy Chimène’s plea. She finally promises her hand to the victor of another duel, which Rodrigue wins, and the two lovers can be reunited. Le Cid, it is the Impossible Love, which has given its name to an inextricable situation : the « Cornelian Dilemma », perfectly exposed in the most famous scene of the play (Scene 6, Act 1), a long monologue on a cruel dilemma : must I avenge my father and loose Chimène’s lover, or save our love by not saving my father’s honor?
