Lazarillo de Tormes (Spanish)

The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes and of his Fortunes and Adversities was published anonymously due to its heretical nature in 1554, during the Spanish Inquisition. This Spanish novella is credited with founding the literary genre of picaresque novels, which relate the adventures of a picaro (rascal or anti-hero) to amusingly expose injustice. This story tells of a Spanish boy Lazarillo’s rise from poverty to a supposed higher official.
