La Princesse de Clèves (French)

One of the first modern European novels, La Princesse de Cleves was published anonymously in 1678. Its author is generally held to be Madame de La Fayette, a French writer of noble birth. Set in the royal court of Henry II of France, it recreates this 16th century era with remarkable precision. Besides the young heroine, Mademoiselle de Chartres, almost every other character is a historical figure. The plot unfolds according to documentary record. This early psychological novel was a great commercial success in its time.
