El Cantar de Mio Cid is the oldest preserved Spanish epic poem or epopeya. These poems were passed through generations and intended to be performed on stage by minstrels. The story is about El Cid, a Spanish hero during the Reconquista or reconquest of Spain from the Moors. El Cid married King Alphonso VI’s cousin, was unfairly exiled, and regains honor during the war. This poem comprises of 3,700 verses and has a realistic tone. The entire work is anonymous, but due to the indepth knowledge of law in the early 13th century, the author could have been a lawyer or some nobleman’s notary.
