Germinal (1885) is the 13th novel in Emile Zola’s 20-volume series Les Rougon-Macquart, and considered Zola’s masterpiece. Zola was the most important exemplar of the literary school of naturalism. Germinal has been published and translated in over 100 countries and inspired at least five films and two TV productions. The title is the seventh spring month in the French Republican Calendar and a Latin word for “seed”. It is a realistic story of a coalminers’ strike in northern France, and its central character Etienne Lantier is a hard-working idealist of Macquart ancestry.
