Author La Fontaine was widely read 17th century French poet and the most famous fabulist. Flaubert said that La Fontaine was the only poet to master the French language before Hugo. France issued postage stamps on La Fontaine and the Fables in 1995. The eldest son of a high class provincial family, La Fontaine led an unconventional life and lived in Paris, separately from his wife and son in Champagne. The Fables display his versatility and talent, and his inspirations for these tales were Greek, Italian, and Indian literature.
