Effi Briest“ is a German novel by Theodor Fontane first published as a book in 1895. It represents poetic realism before the background of the German Empire’s strict social norms. Fontane tells the life of young Effi Briest who gets forced into marriage and breaks under rigid social conventions imposed by her husband and parents.
