Canne al vento is a novel by Sardinian writer and Nobel-Prize winner Grazia Deledda (1875–1936). The novel describes rural Sardinia in the early 1900s through the eyes of Efix, a servant working a small plot of land. The land is owned by the Pintor sisters, two fallen aristocrats struggling in the wake of their father’ death. Efix is bound to the sisters out of a deep sense of guilt, and he dreams of bringing the house back to its old glory. Grazia Deledda describes the thoughts and dreams of the humble protagonist, and at the same time tackles the themes of poverty, honor, superstition and change that characterized the history and culture of Sardinia at the time.
