Candide is a French satire written in 1759 by Voltaire, a philosopher. It begins with a young man, Candide, who is living a sheltered life and being indoctrinated with Optimism by his mentor, Pangloss. Candide, is characterised by its sarcastic tone as well as its erratic, fantastical and fast-moving plot. As expected by Voltaire, Candide has enjoyed both great success and great scandal.
