Alcools is the most famous collection of poems of Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918), a Pole naturalized French in 1916 and one of the greatest French poets of the 20th century. One of the creators of Modern poetry and eulogist of all the artistic avant-garde, from Cubism to Surrealism –a word that he invented- he gathered under the title Alcools 15 years of poetry which have revolutionized that literary genre. The collection covers all his experiments in the matter, from elegy to free verses, absence of punctuation in some poems such as Zone –considered as his Manifest and where he explains that punctuation is useless in poetry, for the rhythm of the verses and the respiration are sufficient- and a vast choice of subjects ranging from daily life to sceneries, hermetism (some of his poems are so difficult to understand that contemporaries called him a charlatan) and pieces which were scandalous at that time (he is also famous for his erotic novels, a fruit of his very agitated love life). Alcools shows a poet torn apart by his (actual) unhappy love affairs, particularly in poems such as Les Colchiques, Mai, and his most famous, La Chanson du Mal Aimé. It is interesting to add that he is also the inventor of the Calligrams, another word he invented, which are poems in drawings and not in verses.
