A Guide To Understanding Mental Illness
by E.Weems

When it comes to mental illness many people have not taken Mental illness as a real medical issue. For years many people have said that mental illness was a fake or a joke or a way that someone can get out of doing something if they’re considered “CRAZY”. In reality mental illness is not a joke. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among adults and is rising quickly amongst teens and pre-teens believe it or not.

Even with wars from the past such as Vietnam and The Gulf War of the early 1990’s mental health issues of the military men and women were not taken seriously. I have a relative that was in the Vietnam War and he stated that the way they dealt with mental illness was one of three ways:

A. Drinking alcohol
B. Drug use
C. Release from the military to society. (Deal with it the best way you can)!

There were no therapists or psychologists or psychiatrists at that time to turn to.

You basically had to deal with it the best way you could. That’s why we have so many Vietnam veterans’ homeless and have so many addicted to drugs and alcohol today. If there were treatment for the mental illness during the Vietnam era many veterans would be better off today. When it comes to the Gulf War, some say that the mental illness awareness was just as bad the Vietnam era. Many military members came back to the U.S. during the Gulf War with severe untreated mental health issues. There has been a significant increase in mental illness in troops during the current operation Iraqi freedom. Thousands of young soldiers have returned from places such as Iraq & Afghanistan, with mental illness issues from (PTSD-Severe Anxiety). The military had no other choice but to look at this problem seriously and deal with it. Many of the service people hat are suffering from mental illnesses are between the ages of (18-26), which is a very young population. Many of these soldiers & sailors went to places like Iraq & what they saw devastated them so much that it interfered with their psyche. Just imagine some of these service members are age 18 & just graduated from high school & not to long ago were at their senior prom & graduation. Then months later they are fighting for their lives and many of them don’t know why. This leads to many attempted suicides and suicides during this era. This raises a question; does the government see the problem of mental illness or just turn its back on it?

Working in the mental health field for a few years has really opened my eyes to this enemy that is taking over so many peoples lives. I use to think that “Crazy” people could just be locked up and they would be fine. This is not the case anymore, especially now of days. There are millions of people that suffer from some type of mental illness that are an active part of society.

This book will explore some of the leading causes and illness associated with mental illness. Millions of people suffer from all types of mental illness from depression to post traumatic stress disorder and many others. I believe in today’s society mental illness is starting to get the spotlight that it should have as a legitimate illness. We as a society can no longer turn our backs on this rising epidemic, WE MUST FACE IT HEAD ON!
