As rumored last month, Apple has updated its Apple Store iOS app with a self-checkout feature that allows customers to pay for items in its chain of retail stores without assistance from an employee. The new EasyPay feature uses the iPhone’s camera to scan a product’s barcode and purchases are charged to the customer’s iTunes account.
The list of what’s new in version 2.0 includes the following:
- Personal Pickup: Buy in the app and choose to pick up your order at any Apple Retail Store. Most in-stock orders are available for pickup within an hour. (U.S. only)
- EasyPay: Purchase select accessories in store quickly by scanning the barcode and completing your transaction right in the app. (U.S. only, requires iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S)
- Track your stuff: View the status of current and previous orders from the order status section in the More tab.
- Additional international support (Canada, China).
This update became available in the App Store today. If you’re looking forward to using this new EasyPay feature as you shop for the holidays, know that you’ll need an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S running iOS 4.2 or higher for it to work.
