‘Viber’ Adds Free Text Messaging

Viber, the app that provides free VOIP calling for the iPhone, has been updated with several new features including free text messaging to other Viber users.

Viber for iOS was initially released in December and we found it to work fairly well. Viber 2.0, which hit the App Store yesterday, adds several improvements plus a new Messages tab. Text messages can be sent and received for free, though this only works with other Viber users.

Viber has promised that Android and Blackberry versions of the app are coming soon as well.

We always welcome alternative text messaging options since we know carriers generally overcharge for this service and are already fans of the free text messaging included with Google Voice (not to mention apps like WhatsApp, TextNow, and many others). Viber is definitely worth a look if you’re interested in avoiding text messaging overage charges if you’re not on an unlimited messaging plan.
