netTALK Brings Free Calls to iPhone and iPad

by Marianne Schultz

netTalk, a VoIP service provider, has released an app offering free calls to the U.S. and Canada on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. netTALK is known for its DUO product, a device that transforms your broadband internet connection into a phone line allowing you to use a traditional phone connected to your router or to your computer via USB to make phone calls, which was released earlier this year. The free netTALK app hit the App Store this week and works on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 3.1 or higher.

The app’s full feature list is as follows:

  • Free calling to the US and Canada
  • Connectivity through WIFI/3G/Edge
  • Record conversations
  • Import your contacts from your phone
  • Receive customized support through 611
  • Dial 2663 for FREE conference calling bridge
  • Free 411 Directory Assistance
  • Integrated contacts from the phone
  • Favorite Contacts

netTALK promises that low-cost international calling is coming soon. Users of the company’s DUO product will also be able to link their DUO phone number to the app in order to receive calls through it.

Using the app requires you to sign up for a free netTALK account – you’re directed to Safari to create it and you’ll receive an email with a verification link to activate your account. Once this is done, you can make free calls at will through the app. In-call options include speakerphone and mute as well as a call recording option. Recorded calls can be accessed within the app via the call history list in the Recents tab.

We tested netTALK briefly on our iPhone 4 and iPad on both Wi-Fi and 3G networks and the app works generally as expected though call quality wasn’t perfect. Note that calls made using the netTALK app will show up as “unknown” or an unidentifiable number through Caller ID on the receiving end.

We love seeing free services like this come to the App Store. Tango wowed us with its free video calling and CallCoin disappointed us with its shady surveys to earn credits to make “free” calls. So far, netTALK appears to be a very viable option for those who want to make free outgoing calls from an iOS device with no strings attached.

Just put it on my ipod and called the wife.
    Works like a charm…

Best free calling service is still WhistlePhone – you get a real US number and hence you have free incoming, you have 3-way conferencing. I wouldn’t mind listening for a 10-15 second ad in the beginning of making any call.

Just downloaded it, it works great

Nice app, I already used Skype, Is this better?

@DJ: If you don’t use the phone number WhistlePhone assigns you, they take it away and you can’t get it back so it isn’t reliable if you’ve given out that number and don’t use it for a few weeks (such as would happen if you were traveling).

@rowan. You are right – that’s true. I however manage it by using a google voice number for now (with GVMobile). So it doesn’t matter if they take my number away. I read some news on the whistlephone website saying that they will let customers choose the area code and allow them to keep it for longer – hope that starts soon.

My personal opinion about this company is that this company and the service SUCKS, a big percentage of the time does not work people call you and calls don’t get through, or when I call out, rings, stop ringing (because receiver answer) but can not hear the other party neither they can hear us.
The worse part is having a representative promising to call you back to sold the problem and never do. I think my husband was on drugs or he wanted me to have a another heart attack when he decided to switch from ATT Home service to this Mickey Mouse phone service.
I WOULD NOT RECOMMNED THIS COMPANY NOT EVEN TO MY WORSE ENEGY.

Can anyone help me. I can’t figure this out. I have a iPad 2 (32GB wi-fi only) and I have created a net talk account as well as downloaded the app on my iPad 2 when I go to the app and select log in it takes me to a blue screen and doesn’t give me the option to sign in with the account I created and activated???

PLEASE HELP I WANT TO USE MY IPAD FOR CONFERENCE CALLS

Chad, this seems to be a common problem with the latest version. I could not get it to work on my iPad2 either. They did respond very quickly to my support request, but did not solve the problem. I guess, as they note, this is a BETA product…not a fully released product. Hopefully, a new version will come out.

Mary Santos seems to be talking about their hardware device. This is a VOIP device (the hardware device, not the ipad app) … come on complainers, VOIP requires some configuration on your router if it is non-standard/compliant. That is not Net Talk’s problem per se.

I use Nettalk for my home phone with no problems, very reliable. I think the main thing is that you have a reliable internet connection. I have FIOS, absolutely 100% reliable. Whats not to like about fiber optic to the house???

I’ve been using Nettalk since the fall of last year and the service is very good. Like Bill stated, you need a reliable internet connection. That was the same case I had with Vonange. I don’t care what claims are made by any VOIP service. You MUST have a tight internet connection.

The same thing goes for the smart phone app. In you’re in an area with poor reception, you’ll have poor service.

i just installed on my android phone, but each time i dialled the number in usa,one ring and after that its dead, why it not work for me?

  13. Sameh

I am still not able to find a reliable and cheap VOIP device, I read many Nettalk Review and many buyers complained of their bad customer support where people reported that they waited 2 hours for someone to get back to them and they disconnect if they are not able to answer your questions
