Official AppShopper App Gets Push Notifications

Version 1.2 of the official AppShopper app has been approved, adding push notifications for app updates and price changes. Push notifications join a list of updates the app received earlier today in version 1.1:

  • Filtering capabilities for My Apps and Wish List
  • Tell a Friend (email includes a link to the webpage for the app)
  • Settings (app device compatibility filtering, notification options, and log in/out of your account) added
  • Help section added
  • Various optimizations and bug fixes

A minor issue made push notifications unavailable in version 1.1 released earlier today, which has been addressed in version 1.2.

In case you missed it, the Importer is available and will import the complete list of apps you already own from iTunes on your computer to your AppShopper profile. AppShopper Importer is for the Mac only though a Windows version is in beta testing (if you have a Windows computer and want to help us test it, let us know) . You can download the Mac version of the application here. It will pull only the app names from your iTunes library and nothing else. The application will ask you to log in to your AppShopper account to get started. If you don’t already have an account, you can create one here (accounts are free).

At the the time of this post, the 1.2 update is still propagating through Apple’s servers and may not yet be available for all users. Reminder: Push notifications won’t work in 1.1.

Thanks for the update.

Push notifications are great. However, I was really hoping the next update would have included app ratings. The website includes them so I’m assuming technically it would not be difficult to include them in the app. It’s a huge omission in my opinion. I can’t tell you how many times I look at an app and based on the description decide to get it but once I get to iTunes I discover it’s only got one or two stars and lots of complaints.

Also, when I’m in Appshopper and I click the “Get” icon I wish it would not automatically check the “Own it” box. Often times when I press “Get” it opens iTunes and once I see all the complaints about the app I end up not actually getting it and then I have to go back and uncheck the “Own it” box. I would say more often than not I actually do not download the app (I would be interested to know if this is true for most users.)

Of course, if my complaint number one were fixed (supplying ratings) there might be fewer instances of pushing the “Get” button to only find out the app sucks. In any case, selecting the “Buy Now” icon on the Appshopper website does not automically check the “Own it” box so neither should the “Get” button in the app. At least in my opinion the app and the website should stay consistent with one another since many of us use both.

Otherwise, it’s a great app and I use it everyday.

I have the same issues as jtfields and concur with his suggestions to include app ratings and not automatically check the “Own it” box.

Can we get a paid version that eliminates the ads? I need my screen real estate to see the list.

Just a bit more info on the problem I’m having. The “Get” button does not work for me if I’m logged in. If I’m not logged in, it works. Anyone else having this issue?

The “Get” button is working fine for me. In fact, it no longer seems to be automatically checking the “Own it” box. I swear I tried it last night and it did check the box. Maybe I’m crazy.

I’d pay for a version without ads, if ratings were added. And, if no paid app, ratings please! 🙂

Also wanted to voice how much I miss the ratings (for the same reason as jtfields). I won’t be using the app without it, but I’ll keep it to check for the next update, hoping it will include ratings.

I have exactly the same prob as JimmyT. Used to be working fine before v1.2.

I’ve also noticed sometimes when I check the “Own it” box it doesn’t seem to take. The check mark will appear but the next time I start the app or go to the website the app isn’t listed under My Apps and when I go find it the “Own it” box is no longer checked. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Appears to be random although I will say it happens more often if I got to the app by going through the “Other apps by ABC Co. >”. So far the “Want it” box has worked everytime. Anyone else experiencing this?
