The online retail giant released an update to its Amazon Mobile app today adding the ability to scan barcodes to search for items in Amazon’s inventory. Version 1.2.8 adds this ability for devices running iOS 4 with an auto-focus lens, which means this feature can only be used on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. Amazon Mobile, which is a universal app that is optimized for the iPad and iPhone, has been a regular in the Top 200 free apps in the Lifestyle category.

The app provides on-screen guidance to scan a barcode and a “Report Mismatch” button is available in case the item scanned does not match the top search result returned.
